The Wetzel Grid Techniquie for Evaluating Physical Fitness in Terms of Physique (Body Build), Developmental Level (Size), and Basal Metabolism. The Wetzel Grid Technique for Evaluating Physical Fitness in Terms of Physique (Body Build), Developmental Level (Size), and Basal Metabolism: A Guide to Individual Progress from Infancy to Maturity is the supreme method of evaluating a child’s physical growth and is preferable to other methods that look at height and weight separately and which judge physique, even obesity, in terms of a weight to height index (BMI). The chart is unique, individualized, in that each child is his or her own standard of development and timeless in that the charts are not based upon, but may be used in reference to, population normative standards.
The chart may be downloaded and saved on your computer or printed out for a hard copy. Alternatively, you may buy hard copies printed double-sided on heavy stock paper.
After accurately measuring and recording the date, child’s weight, height, and age, locate and mark the child’s weight and height on the Wetzel Grid. The point will fall within a physique channel that will reveal clinical ratings of A4 (or beyond) obese, A3, A2 stocky, A1 M B1 medial, B2 linear or thin, B3 borderline, B4 poor. Record the cross reference point as developmental level or size. Plot developmental level (size) with age on the Auxodrome or age schedules of development and read across to basal metabolic rate and caloric needs for size and gender. (Adjustments may need to be made for more or less physically active children)
The most important use of the grid is to track growth by plotting two or more points to reveal growth progress in maintenance of physique and progress as gain in size. Quality growth is defined as directional progress up-channel with no more than half of a channel deviation per 10 levels and speed as no more than two to three levels departure from his or her own age schedule of progress per year. Exceeding, too rapid gain, or failing to meet these tolerance limits indicate unsatisfactory growth and reason to schedule an examination and possible intervention.
